China's new nuclear submarine sinks.
One of China's new nuclear-powered attack submarines sank in a shipyard in Wuhan in late May or early June. Chinese authorities tried to cover up the accident.
It was the first production submarine of China's new Zhou-class submarines. The state-of-the-art submarine was carrying nuclear fuel when it sank. US officials said the Chinese navy did not test the water or surrounding environment for radioactivity after the accident.
This incident has raised questions about China's military and technological capabilities. Concerns have also been raised about training standards and equipment quality by Chinese authorities.
