Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo (born June 24, 1962) is a Mexican politician, scientist, and academic who has served as the 66th president of Mexico since 2024, marking a historic milestone as the first woman and the first person of predominantly Jewish heritage to hold the office. Before her presidency, she was the Head of Government of Mexico City from 2018 to 2023.
A scientist by training, Claudia Sheinbaum earned her PhD in energy engineering from the National Autonomous University of Mexico. She has published over 100 articles and authored two books on topics related to energy, the environment, and sustainable development. She also contributed to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and was recognized as one of BBC's 100 Women in 2018.
In 1989, Sheinbaum joined the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD). From 2000 to 2006, she served as Mexico City's secretary of the environment under then-Head of Government Andrés Manuel López Obrador. In 2014, she left the PRD to join López Obrador’s new party, Morena. She was mayor of Tlalpan from 2015 to 2017 and was elected head of government of Mexico City in 2018, focusing her campaign on reducing crime and enforcing zoning regulations.
